Setting the time on a sundial is relatively easy. Simply align gnomon to the noon position, and align plate so that shadow falls back on the pointer at noon. This represents sun time or celestial north. Actual time will vary
from 16 minutes ahead and behind the dial setting due to changing length of sunlight from day to day. Four days a year solar time corresponds exactly with real time; April 15, June 15, September 1, and December 24. |
